Wen Gao

Wen Gao is a renowned Chinese computing scientist who has made significant contributions to the field of computer science, particularly in multimedia and computer vision. He is currently a Professor at Peking University and serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Information and Engineering Sciences, Director of Pengcheng Lab. In addition, he is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and has held various prestigious positions, including Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of the China Computer Federation. Gao's research achievements span a wide range of areas, including video coding, image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, and human-computer interaction. He has made remarkable contributions to the development of international video coding standards, such as H.264/AVC, AVS, and HEVC. His work on facial expression recognition, sign language recognition, and human action recognition has significantly advanced the state of the art in these domains. Gao has also been instrumental in the development of multimedia technologies for various applications, including e-government, e-learning, and e-health. Over his illustrious career, Wen Gao has received numerous awards in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of computer science. Some of the most notable awards include the IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal in 2020, the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award in 2019, and the China National Natural Science Award in 2013. He is also a Fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
